OUR PRODUCTS

The goodness of Giant Kelp, or Macrocystis Pyrifera is such that Tory Channel Kelp Products’ are made up of very little else.

Our Marine Farm was Certified Organic by AsureQuality in 2013 and is audited, along with our processing plant and procedures, on an annual basis. Under the Marlborough Shellfish Quality Programme (MSQP), our farm is tested weekly for biotoxins.

Seaweeds farmed in a controlled manner and in unpolluted areas take their nutrients from the seawater surrounding them, in our case, Tory Channel and Cook Strait. Here, they have the ability to accumulate mineral elements in a clean environment. Some experts say the rich content of seaweed cannot be matched by any land plant.

Our marine farm is the Tory Channel water testing site for the Marlborough Shellfish Quality Programme and undergoes weekly testing for biotoxins.

In keeping with our strong desire to preserve and make use of as much of the natural seaweed goodness as possible, we developed a cold, wet process for creating our plant and soil food, a concept we continue to work on as we develop products for other industries, including food and pharmaceuticals.

Tory Channel Natural Kelp Tea is a natural, balanced liquid plant food, foliar spray, root bath, fertiliser and soil conditioner made from organic, farm-grown seaweed/kelp.

Farmed in Marlborough’s Tory Channel, our seaweed is harvested on an as-needed basis and transformed into a nutrient-rich liquid form using a cold, wet process that preserves many of its naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Tory Channel Natural Kelp Tea does not contain any additives or chemicals, unless specifically requested, so you can be sure you’re feeding your plants and soils with only the goodness of the sea, plus a little water.

It is an ideal foliar feed and is the nearest thing to “instant'' food that a plant can get, providing a quick boost where needed on anything from Oranges to Orchids.

The impacts of mineral deficiencies in plants are widely documented, and seaweed provides a natural solution to combat those deficiencies. It acts as a natural soil conditioner, retarding the evaporation of water and making clayey soils more porous, in turn helping to bind light and sandy soils.

How to use Natural Kelp Tea
As a foliar spray you would use it over the entire plant.

Many experts believe that the best time to use such methods of feeding is sometime between sunrise and the middle of the morning.

As with many human guilty pleasures, too much of a good thing can be overdone. Be sure to space your sprayings about two weeks apart, so as not to send the plants into a state of shock. Seaweed tonic is such a good food that the best rule is a little and often.

Natural Kelp Tea can also be used as a drip line solution, suitable for vineyards and the like.

Pure Farmed Chopped/Pulped Kelp is a chopped mixture of fresh young Macrocystis Pyrifera, Undaria (Wakame) Ulva, Devillia and Kelp plants. The actual volume of each seaweed varies from season to season.

Rich in minerals, its high content of trace elements act as catalysts in various biochemical processes in both plants and soils. Feeding and stimulating bacterial activity results in greater utilisation of accumulated and dormant fertilisers within the soil and assists in the early establishment of a balanced, healthy soil with strong and vigorous plant growth.

Analysis of Chopped/Pulped Kelp shows more concentrated values than those for our tea. To view these results, please click here.

Our Chopped Kelp is not currently available on a commercial scale, however we continue to explore potential markets for it. If you are interested in purchasing our Chopped/Pulped Kelp, please let us know.

Pure Farmed Chopped/Pulped Kelp

All products manufactured by Tory Channel Kelp Products are made using kelp from the Tory Channel Farm. Some are combined with fresh cold water, and that’s it.

Our seaweed is dive-harvested before being drained in netting pods and then reduced by a cutting mechanism to approximately coleslaw consistency. It is then added to stainless steel fermenting vats along with fresh cold water and left to ferment into kelp concentrate.

This process is carried out under AsureQuality Organic Certification Specifications.

Cawthron Research Institute analysed our products and found them to have the below minerals and amino acids.
